“I come with the wind, and I go with the wind” is a line that few dramatic actors could pull off without wincing, but it’s a piece of cake for Robert De Niro, whose hammier characters — in films like “Angel Heart” and “Analyze This” — have afforded him plenty of practice. Even so, it is the great good fortune of “Red Lights” that Mr. De Niro’s meteorological forecast appears closer to the end of the film than the beginning. As Simon Silver, a blind psychic with Uri Geller-style spoon-bending abilities, Mr. De Niro is both the film’s red herring and its sinister centerpiece, a pulpy excuse for the plot’s supernatural excesses. Before Silver hijacks the plot, Rodrigo Cortés’s smart, talky screenplay and tense direction hold our attention, as much for the unpredictability of the story as the ease with which Sigourney Weaver and Cillian Murphy slide into their roles. Playing a pair of skeptical scientists who investigate paranormal events, smugly debunking as they go, this ghostbusting team seems more than ready for prime time. But just when they’re on the homestretch, their carefully nurtured science-versus-superstition quest is derailed by elaborate pyrotechnics and a bathroom brawl of such punishing realism that I feared for Mr. Murphy’s cheekbones. Until then Mr. Cortés (who made “Buried,” the highly effective, man-in-a-box thriller) and his photographer, Xavi Giménez, paint a darkly troubled world haunted by creepy street people and wily charlatans. They should have known that a levitating De Niro was simply a séance too far.Video Premiere: Madonna's 'Turn Up the Radio'
Madonna's music video for her latest single "Turn Up the Radio" has come out in full. It follows Madge as she is being driven away in the backseat of a convertible from the swarming paparazzi. She picks up some hunks along the way and greets her fans with smiles. The music video was filmed in Florence, Italy while she was on tour to support her studio album "MDNA" where the single is listed. Tom Munro, who previously helped the singer direct "Give It 2 Me" video, reportedly sat behind the lens in this visuals. The song was co-produced by Martin Solveig. "We were working with no limits," he told MTV News. "I think the only thing that she said when we started was, 'I just want people to be able to dance to my music and connect easily with my music,' and also probably to take some risks at some point."
Nicole Kidman knowns a thing or two about Tom Cruise. The couple met in 1989 on the set of director Tony Scott’s action/drama “Days of Thunder”, and were married about a year later. However, in February of 2001, a spokesperson for the couple announced their separation, a decision which was finalized in August of that year. Following the split, Kidman famously took to the Late Show with David Letterman, where she announced to everyone with a bendable ear that she could finally wear high heels again. Ouch. Wicked burn. Kidman has plenty of experience with the ins and outs of being married to someone like Cruise, so it would only make sense that Katie Holmes would look to the actor’s ex-wife for a little moral support. According to celebrity gossip website Hollywood Life, Holmes often turned to Kidman for advice and support throughout their marriage. If anybody has insight into just how crazy and ridiculous Cruise can be, it’s certainly Kidman. “They’ve spoken over the last few weeks. Nicole has been supportive, saying she’s been through it too and to hang in there,” an anonymous source explained to US Weekly. “They spoke when Nicole called the kids. She knows what it’s like in that freaky house.” According to reports, the Church of Scientology repeatedly told Kidman’s children that she was a “sociopath”, a fate which Holmes felt would befall Suri. In order to prevent that from happening, she decided to make her escape. Who did she turn to for advice? Nicole Kidman. “Nicole offered her support and help since she’s been there. She has been a private friend not many people know about. She told Katie her life is great and now she has no regrets,” the source said. Whether there’s any truth to this story remains to be seen.Jessica Biel: Justin Timberlake picks out my outfits
Jessica Biel says fiance Justin Timberlake often rejects and picks out her outfits and chose her engagement ring."When I walk out of the closet after getting dressed in the morning, I'll go like this [turns palms upward as if to say, 'Well?'] And he goes like this [shakes his head no]. Then he picks again. It's hilarious," Biel told InStyle magazine for their August cover story. Check out Biel's style evolution. Biel and Timberlake have reportedly been engaged since January, but Biel said that her engagement ring was her future husband's choice. "I had no say whatsoever [in the ring]. I don't micromanage," Biel said. "He is fearless in his choices and has a real eye for design. And I'll be honest: He has better taste than I do." Timberlake, a pop singer whose acting career took off after the 2010 film "The Social Network," and Biel, who rose to fame with the series "7th Heaven," have never been married before. The two have been dating on and off for more than four years. Their most recent breakup was confirmed in March 2011. They reunited months later and were seen and photographed together at several Los Angeles parties and promotional events in the fall. When asked if she and Timberlake planned on raising any future children in Los Angeles, the Colorado-raised actress said she might like to move away from the Hollywood Hills. "I would like those future little people to have the experience I had, in some capacity," Biel said. "It was fun. I love Colorado; I've always thought that could be a possibility for me." Up next for Biel is the reboot of the film "Total Recall. Biel plays a prostitute/freedom fighter named Melina who teams up with Doug Quaid, played by Colin Farrell, to change the political system in country set in a fascist future. The original science fiction movie was released in 1990 and starred Schwarzenegger as Quaid. Sharon Stone played Lori, Quaid's wife, in the original film and Kate Beckinsale will play her role in the new version. The film is set to be released on August 3 and also stars John Cho and Ethan Hawke.NEWS/Eddie Murphy Dead?! Actor Alive and Well After Yet Another Internet Murder
UPDATE: Twitter really has it in for Eddie Murphy. Just a couple months after his supposed death by winter sports, the funny man was once again the victim of an Internet hoax by the very same seemingly insurmountable rumor. Rest assured, he is alive and well. Though probably a little agitated with social media. Call it death by a thousand Web rumors. For the third time in as many months, word spread like wildfire on social media sites and Twitter that Eddie Murphy met a tragic end, having been killed in a snowboarding accident in Zermatt, Switzerland. But as E! News can confirm., such reports are complete B.S.As E! News previously investigated, they are the product of pranksters at the Global Associated News, a macabre site behind a rash of similar hoaxes—whether it was falling off a cliff in New Zealand (the purported fate of poor Jeff Goldbum) or the ill-timed mishaps in the Swiss and Austrian Alps that supposedly took the lives of Adam Sandler, Charlie Sheen, Ryan Gosling and, yes, the Trading Places star on two prior occasions (see here and here). Alas, the only death Murphy's had to deal with these days was the awful demise of his latest comedy, A Thousand Words, at the box office, which has grossed a paltry $18 million since hitting theaters in March. Thankfully, the funnyman is doing just fine.
Savannah Guthrie was selected to fill the hole left by former TODAY co-host Ann Curry, who watched helplessly as NBC scrambled to replace her following record low ratings. This week, Guthrie made her debut as co-host on the popular morning program, alongside Matt Lauer and Al Roker. As a fan of Ann Curry, Guthrie’s shift to the co-hosting gig isn’t particularly thrilling, as I still hold the belief that the seasoned journalist got the shaft by her superiors. Still, at least the network went with someone who’s already established herself with viewers. That should make the transition a bit easier for devoted TODAY fanatics. “This was a little unexpected, as we all know, but I just want to say that I’m so proud and honored to be in a place occupied by so many women I admire,” Guthrie explained. She added that it was nice to have a job that “you can describe as fun and actually mean it.” Although media speculation about Curry’s departure was rampant, the network itself has said very little about her replacement. However, NBC New President Steve Capus explained to the Hollywood Reporter that Curry didn’t have the enthusiasm for the “fluff” pieces that the network required her to tackle. Curry’s expertise is in serious journalism, so feigning excitement over cooking segments and celebrity pieces wasn’t exactly her forte. This week may be Guthrie’s “official” first week as co-host, but it’s certainly not her first rodeo. One day before Curry bid farewell to viewers, Savannah took the spot next to Matt Lauer, resulting in Good Morning America’s complete annihilation of TODAY in the ratings. According to Nielsen, GMA stomped a hole in its competitor to the tune of 670,000 viewers. NBC is hoping that Guthrie’s warm personality and jovial manner can help bring viewers back into the fold. Sadly, a lot of folks are none too pleased with the way the network has handled Curry’s departure, which may ultimately cost them in the long run. Personally, it’s kind of hard to view TODAY in the same light knowing that they’ll boot their hosts at the drop of a hat if they fail to meet expectations.Kate Middleton Magazine Cover Shows The Duchess With Rotten Teeth
Kate Middleton’s latest magazine cover isn’t too pretty. The Duchess of Cambridge made the cover of The New Republic, but she isn’t accompanied by her sparkling whites. Instead, the magazine PhotoShopped a stereotypical set of British teeth on Middleton next to the title “Something’s Rotten: The Last Days Of Britain.” The Daily Mail reports that the photo of Kate Middleton on the cover of the New Republic, as well as several articles inside the magazine detailing the state of the UK before the Olympics, have caused an outrage online. One Daily Mail reader wrote: “Cheap shot… They know she will remain dignified and not say a word, allowing them to ‘get away with it.’” “No fan of the royals or Kate either, but its a shameful abuse of photoshop taking very cheap and nasty shot at the royals, Kate and Brits in general. I agree with the person who said they should be sued.”
Salma Hayek has in the past brought her daughter Valentina, 4, to visit her on movie sets, but the actress says she opted to keep her away from her latest project - Oliver Stone's new film "Savages." In the R-rated flick, the 45-year-old Oscar nominee plays Elena, a "queen" of a Mexican drug cartel that kidnaps a girl named O, played by Blake Lively, who is in a romantic and sexual relationship with two male pot growers, who are friends, portrayed by Aaron Johnson and Taylor Kitsch. "I mean, it's very sexy, this movie," Hayek said, when asked on the ABC show "LIVE! With Kelly" on Wednesday, July 5 about bring her daughter to work. "It's very, very violent so if you're the kind of people who like sexy and violence, if you like it hot, this movie is for you. But done beautifully. It's very elegant." The Mexican actress reiterated her reluctance to bring Valentina to the "Savages" set in an interview on NBC's "Tonight Show With Jay Leno" about two weeks ago. "She's not going to watch this movie," she said about 'Savages.' "Actually, this was the only movie that she was not on the set. I usually bring her on the set and she always likes to sit right next to the monitor and she bosses everyone around." Last month, Hayek was photographed with Valentina on the set of the more kid-friendly "Grown Ups 2," a 2013 sequel to Adam Sandler's hit 2010 comedy. The child also visited Hayek when she filmed the PG-13-rated 2009 film "Cirque du Freak." Hayek told Leno that Valentina was allowed to scream 'Action' while watching her film "Grown Ups 2" and "Here Comes the Boom," which hits theaters in October. "I know Oliver Stone would have not let her come in and say, 'Excuse me, Oliver, let me just take over the set.' No,'" Hayek told Leno. In "Savages," Elena works with two men who carry out her bidding - Lado, played by Benicio Del Toro and Alex, played by Demian Bichir. Hayek's character negotiates with O's boyfriends herself via teleconference. However, she uses a voice modulator to make her voice sound deeper and more masculine. "When I'm talking to this guy they don't know it's a pretty girl like me running this cartel business," Hayek said on "LIVE! with Kelly." "Don't mess with Elena!" "Savages" hits theaters on Friday, July 6. Savage video trailer‘Intense’ Cruise awed Stone
“Tom is a worker,” the director told us during a special Film Plus screening of “Born on the Fourth of July,” the 1989 blockbuster he made starring Cruise, at MoMA on Thursday night. “His determination is legendary,” Stone said. “People know about it now, but back then he did strike us as totally intense. I almost wished he would relax because it was so tough a role. He delivered.” Stone — who declared last month, “I was crazy for many years” — also commented on Cruise’s shocking split from Katie Holmes, telling us simply, “We all have our ups and downs in life, and I wish him well.” Cruise, who has been filming the movie “Oblivion” in Iceland, sent a video message for the event, describing the profound experience of making “Fourth of July,” which earned him an Oscar nomination. “I can’t tell you how much I wish I was there watching it with you,” Cruise stated, without mentioning his divorce drama. “I remember the first time I saw it with an audience, and that experience just means a lot to me.” Even though Cruise is out of town — not to mention dealing with an increasingly difficult divorce — he still has time to send flowers to friends. Ron Kovic, the Vietnam War veteran whom Cruise portrayed in the film, told us: “Tom turned 50, so I sent 50 red roses to his office . . . and at my hotel room we received a knock on the door this morning, and Tom had sent me nearly three dozen roses.” Kovic added: “We’ve never missed that tradition in the past 22 years. Ever since the movie came out, we’ve shared birthdays by sending each other flowers.” Cruise spent his July 3 birthday in LA with kids Connor and Isabella and other members of his family, while Holmes and their daughter, Suri, remained in New York. Holmes has been staying in the same luxury Chelsea building where Cruise’s ex Penelope Cruz once lived.
NEW YORK (AP) — Rihanna sued her former accountants Thursday, blaming them for tens of millions of dollars in losses, shoddy bookkeeping, a failure to recommend she trim expenses when a 2009 tour was losing money and an ongoing audit by the Internal Revenue Service. The lawsuit in federal court in Manhattan sought unspecified damages against New York-based Berdon LLP and two accountants. A Berdon spokeswoman said the company had no immediate comment. The singer, suing under her real name, Robyn Fenty, alleged through her attorneys that the defendants drained tens of millions of dollars from revenues while she launched four national and international tours over a five-year period. By the "Last Girl on Earth" tour in 2009, Rihanna learned that the tour had managed "significant net losses" despite robust revenues, though the defendants had managed to pocket 22 percent of the tour's total revenues while paying Rihanna just 6 percent of revenues, the lawsuit said. It said Berdon's unusual accounting practice of paying itself a percentage of gross tour income as commissions left it no incentive to "counsel" Rihanna to reduce expenses or put in place appropriate financial controls. The lawsuit alleged that the practice of paying itself commissions on revenues was not standard in the accounting and business management industry and created a clear conflict of interest. Rihanna's lawyers also blamed the accounting firm for an ongoing IRS audit of her tax returns, saying she was forced to spend significant resources to correct errors resulting from negligence. Since firing the firm and its accountants in September 2010, Rihanna's fortunes already have reversed, the lawsuit said. The "Loud" tour stretching from June 2011 to December 2011 produced a net profit equal to more than 40 percent of total tour revenues, it added. According to the lawsuit, the singer hired the accountants in 2005 when she was a 16-year-old from Barbados launching her career. She alleged that they repeatedly breached their agreements, engaged in misconduct and malfeasance, paid themselves excessive commissions, created entities without regard to their effect on her taxes and failed to document revenue and expenses and implement a proper budget. The lawsuit also blamed the company for Rihanna's 2009 purchase of a new home, saying competent business managers would have told her that her tour was losing money and that it would not be advisable to buy such an expensive home at that time. Last year, Rihanna sued a real estate company in Los Angeles over the $6.9 million purchase of a hillside home in 2009, saying it had serious structural defects that made it inhabitableChris Rock Lights Up Controversy With Fourth of July Tweet
Chris Rock’s July Fourth tweet has some people in a decidedly un-celebratory mood. On Wednesday, the comedian tweeted, “Happy white peoples independence day the slaves weren’t free but I’m sure they enjoyed fireworks.” The backlash ignited faster than San Diego’s botched fireworks show. One follower told Rock, “No more of your movies anymore.” Others said Independence Day paved the way for abolition, and many fell back on four letter words. Some of Rock’s famous friends came to his defense. The actor Don Cheadle tweeted, “Chris Rock was making a joke … If you don’t think it’s funny. ok. But keep it in perspective.” In a statement to the Huffington Post, Elon James White, star of the web show “This Week in Blackness,” called the criticism “absolutely ridiculous.” “[P]art of being American, to me,” he added, “is that I have to acknowledge all the bulls**t that comes with it.” Rock’s rep did not immediately respond to requests for comment, but it seems the comedian’s moved on. He’s since tweeted about the Knicks and the iTunes release of his indie movie, “2 Days In New York.”
Fairytale Hollywood couple Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes announced they were calling it quits after five years of marriage, ending an unexpected love story dogged by tabloid rumors. "Kate has filed for divorce and Tom is deeply saddened and is concentrating on his three children," Amanda Lundberg, Cruise's representative, told AFP on Friday. "Please allow them their privacy to work this out." "This is a personal and private matter for Katie and her family," said Jonathan Wolfe, the attorney representing Holmes. "Katie's primary concern remains, as it always has been, her daughter's best interest." Cruise, who turns 50 on Tuesday, wed Holmes, 33, in a storybook Italian castle in November 2006 after declaring his love for the former "Dawson's Creek" star live on "Oprah" -- famously hopping on a couch in the studio. It was Holmes's first marriage and Cruise's third. They have a six-year-old daughter, Suri. The "TomKat" split comes just 10 days after the "amicable" parting of US actor Johnny Depp and French singer/actress Vanessa Paradis, and will doubtless lead to renewed chatter about the pressures on Hollywood couples. Holmes has admitted to having a teenage crush on Cruise, even saying she had put up a poster of the "Top Gun" star in her bedroom. After a whirlwind courtship that culminated in a proposal under the Eiffel Tower in June 2005, what followed resembled a fairytale -- at first. Fireworks lit up the night sky above the 15th-century Odescalchi castle near Rome when Cruise and Holmes tied the knot on November 18, 2006. Glitterati from the worlds of cinema, sports and music were on hand at the sprawling estate perched above the lakeside town of Bracciano as Holmes offered her hand to the "Mission Impossible" star, who has three Oscar nominations. Italian media reported that American Scientology leader David Miscavige officiated at the event, arguably the most high-profile Scientology wedding to date, in a ceremony that lasted no more than 15 minutes. Reports at the time said that under the prenuptial agreement, Holmes -- who converted to Scientology -- would receive $3 million for every year of the marriage plus ownership of a California mansion if they split. But it remains to be seen how the stylish, dark-haired duo -- often snapped at glittery events alongside soccer star David Beckham and his wife Victoria -- will handle the custody of their daughter, who has been called one of Hollywood's most fashionable youngsters. According to the website TMZ.com, Holmes wants sole custody. Citing unnamed sources, the website claims Holmes filed for divorce mainly over Cruise's ties to Scientology, "fearing that Tom would drag Suri deep into the church." "We're told the couple had been arguing over Suri -- that she's now of the age where Scientology becomes a significant part of her life," it said. Tabloids, shadowing the couple since the get-go, have speculated for some time that the relationship was on the rocks after the pair was not seen together for months. Cruise has also won two lawsuits alleging he is gay. In an interview with Playboy magazine in May, Cruise said he would be spending his birthday shooting a film in Iceland -- without his significant other. "My family, my wife, they understand. It's who I am," he said. Addressing rumors about his private life, he added: "You just have to keep going and remember that. The other stuff? I hear it, I read it, I get it. But life is not a matter of trying to prove anything to anybody." Born in New York state in 1962, Cruise was raised by his mother and barely knew his father who left early on. That didn't change his feelings about family. "I always wanted to be a father, a husband," he told Playboy. Cruise, still one of Hollywood's most bankable stars as shown by recent box office smash "Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol," was married to Australian actress Nicole Kidman from 1990 to 2001. The couple had two adopted children, 19-year-old Isabella and 17-year-old Connor. He was also married to American actress Mimi Rogers from 1987 to 1990 and had a three-year relationship with Spanish star Penelope Cruz after splitting up with Kidman. Holmes, who was born and raised in Ohio, appeared in "Batman Begins" (2005) and starred alongside Adam Sandler in the critically panned 2011 romantic comedy "Jack and Jill." News of the divorce set off an avalanche of messages on Twitter, many sarcastic in nature. "Mimi Rogers 1956; Nicole Kidman 1967; Katie Holmes 1978 - my supercomputer analysis says Tom Cruise's next wife was born in 1989," said one, signed HAL_9000.Erin AndrewsErin Andrews leaves ESPN, headed to Fox?
HOLLYWOOD, June 30 (UPI) -- ESPN has announced the departure of U.S. sportscaster Erin Andrews, who appears to be in talks to make a move to Fox Sports. A source at ESPN, whose name was not reported, told Sports Illustrated the network had made an "aggressive offer" to keep Andrews, 34, before her contract expires at the end of June. Andrews' agent declined to comment on her plans now that she has left the network, but it appears she might join Fox Sports, The Hollywood Reporter said Friday. Sources with knowledge of Fox's plans said it's almost certain Andrews will take a role at the network, THR said. Andrews most recently has hosted the ESPN College Gameday preshow. In her eight years at the network, she has covered Major League Baseball, the College World Series, and college basketball and football. In 2008, she was at the center of a stalking case in which a man watched her through peepholes at her hotel rooms in Nashville and Milwaukee. The man was sentenced to 30 months in prison and is scheduled to be released next month, THR said.
