Angelina's Aunt Dies of Breast Cancer

Posted by abohan Senin, 27 Mei 2013 0 komentar
Barely two weeks after Angelina Jolie announced that she had a preventive double mastectomy to avoid breast cancer, People.com reports that Jolie's aunt, Debbie Martin, has lost her battle with the disease and passed away on Sunday. She was 61.

Martin was the sister of Jolie's mother, Marcheline Bertrand, who died in 2007 after a seven-year battle with ovarian cancer. Martin was hospitalized on Wednesday, and her husband Ronald Martin says that while Jolie was not able to be with her aunt when she passed, she had seen Martin many times since her diagnosis, adding, "Angelina has been sending her wishes. She and my wife texted each other. It was difficult for my wife, during the last few months, to communicate."
Jolie is reportedly preparing to next have her ovaries surgically removed as a preventive measure, and Ronald tells People.com of her previous surgery, "Because of the BRCA gene in the maternal side of the family, Angelina did the smartest thing on earth. It takes a lot of courage to have your breasts removed."

Angelina Jolie: I had double mastectomy

Posted by abohan Selasa, 14 Mei 2013 0 komentar

Oscar-winning actress Angelina Jolie revealed Tuesday she has undergone a double mastectomy to reduce her high risk of breast cancer, encouraging other women to address threats to their health.
The ultra-glamorous Jolie, whose mother Marcheline Bertrand died of ovarian cancer at the age of 56, said she had managed to keep the issue quiet for months and continue working. Her partner Brad Pitt hailed her as "heroic."

Three months of grueling medical procedures including breast reconstruction ended in late April. Jolie, whose father is Oscar-winning actor Jon Voight, said her chances of developing breast cancer are now just five percent.
"Once I knew that this was my reality, I decided to be proactive and to minimize the risk as much I could. I made a decision to have a preventive double mastectomy," the 37-year-old actress wrote in The New York Times.
"I started with the breasts, as my risk of breast cancer is higher than my risk of ovarian cancer, and the surgery is more complex," she wrote, explaining that she carries a "faulty" gene, BRCA1, that put her at higher risk.
Her doctors estimated she had an 87 percent risk of breast cancer and a 50 percent risk of ovarian cancer, and Jolie said she went ahead with the procedures so her six children would not lose her at a young age.
"I can tell my children they don't need to fear they will lose me to breast cancer," said Jolie. She and Pitt, a Hollywood power couple dubbed "Brangelina" in the tabloids, have three adopted and three biological children.
Jolie described a several-stage surgical process, the main one of which is an operation that can take up to eight hours as the breast tissue is removed and temporary fillers are put in place.
"You wake up with drain tubes and expanders in your breasts. It does feel like a scene out of a science fiction film. But days after surgery you can be back to a normal life," she wrote.
The final phase of the process involved reconstruction of the breasts with implants, she said, adding: "There have been many advances in this procedure in the last few years and the results can be beautiful."
Jolie thanked Pitt for his support, saying the couple had "managed to find moments to laugh together," and said she now only has only small scars that her children can see without alarm.
"They know that I love them and will do anything to be with them as long as I can," wrote the actress, who took home the best supporting actress Oscar in 2000 for "Girl, Interrupted."
"On a personal note, I do not feel any less of a woman. I feel empowered that I made a strong choice that in no way diminishes my femininity."
Jolie, respected for her humanitarian work overseas, said she was speaking out to help other women understand their options, and also to urge authorities to help women in lower-income countries to get the health care they need.
"I am writing about it now because I hope that other women can benefit from my experience. Cancer is still a word that strikes fear into people's hearts, producing a deep sense of powerlessness," she wrote.
"It has got to be a priority to ensure that more women can access gene testing and lifesaving preventive treatment, whatever their means and background, wherever they live."
Jolie, one of the world's highest-paid performers, said the cost of getting tested for BRCA1 and another faulty gene, called BRCA2, is more than $3,000 in the United States and that this "remains an obstacle for many women".
"Life comes with many challenges. The ones that should not scare us are the ones we can take on and take control of," Jolie wrote.
Pitt, 49, quickly praised his wife for her bold move.
"Having witnessed this decision firsthand, I find Angie's choice, as well as so many others like her, absolutely heroic," Pitt told London's Evening Standard newspaper.
"All I want for her is for her to have a long and healthy life, with myself and our children. This is a happy day for our family."
Jolie earned plaudits for going public with her story.
CNN anchor Zoraida Sambolin revealed on-air that she would have a double mastectomy after being diagnosed with breast cancer, saying Jolie "gives me strength."
Grammy-winning singer Sheryl Crow, herself a breast cancer survivor, tweeted: "I commend Angelina Jolie for her courage and thoughtfulness in sharing her story today regarding her mastectomy. So brave!"
Oscar winner Kathy Bates, who also battled cancer, said on Twitter she admired Jolie's courage and "classy way" of sharing her story, but also sent a health warning to women.
"I tested negative for BRCA 1 & 2. Had both breast & ovarian cancer. Examine your breasts, regular mammograms. Stay vigilant," Bates said.
Kristi Funk, the founder of the Pink Lotus clinic in California where Jolie was treated, said outside the facility: "We hope that the awareness she is raising around the world will save countless lives."
But the chief medical officer of the American Cancer Society, Otis Brawley, said that, while a preventive double mastectomy "might be the right choice for some women," women should seek second opinions before proceeding.

He is breathing with the help of an oxygen mask and needs intravenous feeding and antibiotics. "It is testament to Robin's extraordinary courage, iron will and deep reserves of physical strength that he has overcome quite incredible odds to get where he is now," Thillainayagam said in a statement posted on Gibb's official Facebook page. Angelina JolieAngelina Jolie Named To New United Nations Post
Between mothering six children, fostering an acting career, and being engaged to one of the hottest men on the planet, you might think Angelina Jolie doesn’t have time for much else. But you’d be wrong. In 2001, she became the ambassador for the United Nations Refugee Agency, meaning she visits displaced people in countries all over the world. In 2007 she visited a refugee camp in Chad in order to raise awareness of the tens of thousands of people fleeing Darfur, where a mass slaughter was taking place. “It’s always hard to see decent people, families, living in such difficult conditions,” she said. “What is most upsetting is how long it is taking the international community to answer this crisis.” Jolie was recently named to the post of Special Envoy for the High Commissioner for Refugees, Antonio Guterres, and was sent to Columbia this past weekend to visit people displaced when they were forced over the border to Ecuador. A statement issued by UNHCR representative Adrian Edwards said: “During a decade of service as UNHCR’s Goodwill Ambassador, Ms. Jolie has conducted more than 40 field visits around the world, becoming an expert on the phenomenon of forced displacement and a tireless advocate on their behalf. In her new role, she is expected to focus on large-scale crises resulting in the mass displacement of people, to undertake advocacy and represent UNHCR and Mr. Guterres at the diplomatic level, engaging with relevant interlocutors on global displacement issues. Ms. Jolie will focus on complex emergencies and will work to facilitate lasting solutions for people displaced by conflict. High Commissioner Guterres is grateful to Ms. Jolie for accepting this role at a critical time in global displacement. Her new status as Special Envoy is effective immediately.” Jolie can add another accomplishment to the list, as today she was named honorary citizen of Sarajevo for her contribution to telling the story of war-time events in Bosnia with the 2011 film “In The Land Of Blood And Honey”, which she directed.

Angelina Jolie and Zahara Jolie-Pitt Sighting in Chicago

Angelina Jolie and her long-term partner Brad Pitt - whose relationship is rumored to be going through a rocky patch - are reportedly planning to travel to the African country to find a fourth disadvantaged child they can give a home to.

The couple - who are already adoptive parents to six-year-old Cambodian boy Maddox, Vietnamese son Pax Thien, three, and two-year-old Zahara, who was born in Ethiopia - believe another baby will strengthen their relationship and help Zahara feel more secure within the family.

A source close to the couple - who also have a 14-month-old biological daughter, Shiloh - told Britain's Daily Mail newspaper: "Brad and Angelina have made no secret of the fact they are keen to extend their rainbow family.

"Angelina, in particular, feels very strongly that while Shiloh will grow up seeing the family resemblances between herself and her natural parents, and Maddox and Pax will have a connection through their birthplaces, Zahara has no such close-knit bond. Brad and Angelina hope that by finding a brother or sister for her, it will help Zahara feel more comfortable and happy in her own skin, and also bring them closer together."

The couple are said to be planning to visit Ethiopia's Wide Horizons agency, the same place that introduced them to Zahara, in November.

Brad Pitt Walks Like A "Caveman" & Looks "Banal"

The 'Ocean's Thirteen' star, regarded by many as the world's sexiest man, is not impressed when he sees his reflection.

He said: "When I look in the mirror, what I see is pretty banal. Also when I'm tired, I walk like a caveman."

Brad's looks are not the only thing he is unhappy with.

He added: "I don't like my bad moods."

Brad - who has three adopted children, Maddox, five, Pax, three, Zahara, two, and one-year-old biological daughter Shiloh, with lover Angelina Jolie - recently hit out at young Hollywood stars.

Brad Pitt also believes they focus too much on fame and not enough on more important social issues.

He said: "You have to focus on other more important issues as well as the fame side of things. Those 'car wreck' tendencies can be very disruptive and aren't a good way to live your life."

Eva Longoria's $2 Million OK! Magazine Deal

Posted by abohan Senin, 25 Juni 2007 0 komentar
Eva Longoria will receive more than $2 million from OK! magazine for exclusive coverage of her wedding, it has been reported.

The 'Desperate Housewives' actress, who is set to marry basketball star Tony Parker in a French castle in July 7, was also approached by America's People magazine but decided to give its rival the rights.

OK! editor-in-chief Sara Ivens said: "These were obviously highly coveted photos, and we were thrilled to negotiate the exclusive rights. Covering great moments with the celebrities that we love is what the magazine's all about."

People magazine is said to be incensed about missing out on the much sought-after deal.

A source told the New York Post newspaper: "People editors broke the story of their wedding and were working hard with Eva's reps to secure the picture rights. They were upset about losing the photos."

People magazine's coverage of the couple's reported break-up did not influence Eva's decision, it has been claimed.

Another source said: "It was entirely a matter of money, straight up to the final negotiation. Everyone wanted the photos - but everyone knows OK! will pay a lot for them."

People paid $4.1 million for the first photographs of Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt's daughter Shiloh.

Angelina Jolie Misjudged Pretty Boy Brad Pitt

Posted by abohan Minggu, 24 Juni 2007 0 komentar
Angelina Jolie was left floored by Brad Pitt soon after they first met because she thought he'd be nothing more than a good guy she could race motorbikes with on the set of Mr & Mrs Smith.

The actress quickly fell in love with the Hollywood hunk, who was married to Jennifer Aniston at the time, and she admits she still can't believe he is "more man than any man" she's ever met.

She tells style magazine Marie Claire, "I wouldn't have, from a distance, said, 'That's a man who would be an amazing, dedicated father,' or 'That's a man who truly loves helping people or whom I'd love to talk politics with.' "He's a lot more than people assume he is."

Jolie credits her partner for helping her overcome periodical dark moments in her life - just by listening to her.

She adds, "I've had that problem in my life, where if I get emotional, I tend to just go (and) sit by myself. But he is a great listener, and he has given me wonderful advice."

Angelina Jolie & Brad Pitt Drops Off The Kids In School

Angelina Jolie feels a connection to people "around the world" and this sparked her decision to adopt three children.

When Angelina was asked if seeing displaced families in refugee camps inspired her to adopt, she said: "It might be part of the reason my kids are from some of those countries, and were on their own. I feel very close to children or people around the world and when I met my kids, they were, to me, extraordinary - and felt just like family. And that's how I feel about the world and other people's kids."

Angelina, who adopted her first child, five-year-old Maddox, from Cambodia, says she was destined to raise him.

She told CNN's Anderson Cooper: "I fell in love with the people of Cambodia and I was sitting with a little kid playing blocks and feeling like my son was somewhere there. And he was."
