Supermodel Tyra Banks has been getting a lot of press this week for her “open letter to models” in The Daily Beast in which she praises Vogue magazine’s new pledge to stop using young teen models and those who appear to have eating disorders. This move, she says, could do wonders for little girls, who have been subjected to increasingly twiggy beauty standards. “When I started modeling, I used to see models who seemed unhealthy backstage at the fashion shows,” she wrote. “They appeared to be abusing their bodies to maintain a certain weight. These girls were booked over and over again for countless fashion shows and photo shoots. I’m sure many of you today have witnessed this, or even live it. Now, real progress is finally on the horizon. Vogue is stepping up, doing the right thing, and protecting that girl. Perhaps that girl is you!” Well, thanks for the encouragement, Tyra. Sort of. Because, really, that girl is decidedly not me. Or my daughter, I hope. See, what gets lost a lot in this whole “models are too thin and therefore bad role models for our girls” discussion is that maybe models shouldn’t really be role models for our girls. There’s nothing wrong with the “Vogue” announcement earlier this month. Nobody is going to take issue with Conde Nast International Chairman Jonathan Newhouse’s statement that “Vogue believes that good health is beautiful. Vogue Editors around the world want the magazines to reflect their commitment to the health of the models who appear on the pages and the well-being of their readers." But the idea that this will change body image problems for girls misses the point. The models in women (and teen) magazines will continue to be thin and beautiful. That’s their job. (I mean, it’s not like aspiring to look like Tyra Banks is not particularly attainable for most women, either.) And having "thin and beautiful" as an aspiration – perhaps not the loftiest of goal. So as Vogue changes its standards, what we can change at home is how we talk to our daughters about media, about the images in the magazines, and – all importantly – the way we absorb these messages ourselves.

Britney Spears spoke to FOX cameras before she took the stage at yesterday's Upfronts ... and she did so while chewing a piece of gum. Ding dang, y'all!!! Britney ditched the gum by the time she went in front of the advertisers ... so clearly someone caught a glimpse of Brit's red carpet faux pas and corrected it. For what it's worth ... Simon Cowell was chewing away too! The gum wasn't the only thing Britney was chompin' on during yesterday's festivities -- Brit took a few bites out of her fingernails, too.

Sadly, Mitchell Guist of the show, Swamp People, died Monday in Louisiana while loading his boat. The cause of death is unknown. However, the History Channel released a statement after he passed away. "We are extremely saddened to report that our friend and beloved member of the Swamp People family, Mitchell Guist, has passed away earlier today," the statement reads. "Mitchell passed on the swamp, doing what he loved. We appreciate your respect for the Guist family’s privacy and hope you join us in sending our thoughts and prayers to his brother, Glenn, and the rest of the Guist family." ~ History Channel and Original Media on the death of Mitchell Guist. The beloved Swamp People cast member died after suffering a seizure. Reportedly, he fell out of his boat on the Belle River, and was rushed back to shore, where CPR was attempted, according to the Hollywood Reporter. However, all efforts to revive Guist failed. He was later pronounced dead at a local hospital in Louisiana.

After months of frenzied speculation over which ludicrously famous artist Simon Cowell would be able to woo into a judging seat on The X Factor, the answer has finally been finalized. Britney Spears will be taking the seat left behind by Nicole Scherzinger... or wait, was it Paula Abdul's? Both were fired, as was host Steve Jones, after last season. Fellow ex-Disney princess Demi Lovato will sit in whichever seat Brit doesn't take. Both appointments were announced at Fox's Upfronts presentation in New York this afternoon (via Billboard), and were also confirmed via Brit's own Twitter photo. "Britney and Demi" is now trending nationwide on Twitter, because, duh. E! News reported last week that Spears' deal was confirmed, albeit by an unnamed "source close to the star," and that the grimy details were all that were being discussed up until the Upfronts. Brit has reportedly settled for a measly $15 million for the season. Yes, for one season. That's about two months of broadcasting (last season ran from October 25 to December 22), which equals roughly a $250,000 daily paycheck. For comparison, Abdul and Scherzinger earned a combined $4 million for season one. For that price, Spears could buy a whole new mansion and have some green left over! The actual details of both deals, however, have yet to be confirmed, but most eyes are on Britney here — after failing to do press for her most recent album, Femme Fatale, and giving a series of shaky TV performances to promote it, the pressure will be on for the engaged pop star to deliver on The X Factor.

ARGATE- The funeral for former radio host and veterans advocate April Kauffman was held just days after she was murdered inside of her Linwood home. Hundreds came together at Beth El Synagogue in Margate to say their final goodbyes to April Kauffman, who was murdered inside of her Linwood home just days ago. "She's gonna be missed, certainly will continue to inspire us move forward to continue to support and care for those in need" says Andrew Malson, Sons of American Legion. "Terrible, absolute tragedy. What a terrible thing to happen in the beautiful town of Linwood" says Roseanne Finley, friend of Kauffman family. Both Dr. James Kauffman, April's husband, and her daughter Kim, spoke during the somber service. Kim read an emotional poem, while Dr. Kauffman said "I love and miss you so much. I don't know what to do without you. I hope to be with you soon". "Just astounding, I can't believe he was even able to stand up there, such a terrible tragedy" says Dr. Laura Bonaker, friend of Kauffman family, pediatrician in Plesantville. "Hopefully they catch the person and they get what they deserve" says Finley. While many questions remain unanswered, officials say that Dr. Jim Kauffman has gone ahead and hired himself an attorney. Dr. Kauffman hired well known attorney Ed Jacobs the day after the murder, the same day his car was towed away from the crime scene on Woodstock Drive in Linwood. The Atlantic County Prosecutor said everyone is being questioned after the 47-year old Kauffman was found shot multiple times in her bedroom. "It is horrible, Dr. Jim is very well respected in this community as a physician and so is April. To not know any information is a little scary" says Bridget Gaffney, friend of Kauffman family, Linwood. Jacobs says Dr. Kauffman has fully cooperated with the Atlantic County Prosecutors office and will continue to do so. "Dr. James last words were I hope to be with you soon and that would just be the worst end to this tragedy" says Gaffney. "Were just hoping they catch whoever did it" says Finley.

Ryan Seacrest may have some competition for the affections of his girlfriend, dancer and choreographer Julianne Hough; it seems she has a crush on “Idol” contestant Phillip Phillips. Seacrest called her out on it in front of the audience last night after Phillips performed a Dave Matthews Band song, saying, “We were backstage and you ran past my girlfriend and she sighed and blushed. I think I heard her say ‘yummy.’” Phillips, who is a fan favorite, later said he couldn’t complain about a gorgeous woman being “giddy” around him.

A Los Angeles judge granted Britney Spears' fiance, Jason Trawick, to become a co-conservator over the singer Wednesday. According to The Associated Press, Trawick will join Spears' father, Jamie Spears, in helping to manage Britney's personal affairs, excluding her assets. Superior Court Judge Reve Goetz granted the approval after Spears requested her future husband join her court conservatorship shortly after their engagement in December 2011. Spears, 30, has been under a court-ordered conservatorship since February 2008. Her father took control of her personal affairs after the Grammy-winning singer was hospitalized twice after suffering a psychological breakdown. Geraldine Wyle, an attorney for Jaime, told reporters following the hearing that her client was "thrilled" to have Trawick as a co-conservator. Trawick has previously acted as Spears' agent and did attend the hearing Wednesday.
